Security Driver Services
A security driver does more than drive. They plan safe routes, keep journeys discreet, watch for anything unusual on the road and at each stop, and get passengers where they need to be without drawing attention. Quantum Group provides security drivers for executives, visiting guests and private clients who want a professional, vetted driver with a security mindset.
We provide security driver services across Sussex, Surrey and London from our base in Crawley, including journeys to and from Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

What a Security Driver Provides
Many people need more than a taxi or chauffeur but less than a full close protection team. A security driver fills that gap. The driver is responsible for the vehicle and the journey: planning the route, timing pick-ups so passengers are not left waiting in the open, choosing safe places to stop and keeping travel details private.
Our security driver service can include:
- Route planning and journey risk assessment
- Airport, rail and venue transfers
- Discreet driving for meetings and events
- Alternative routes planned in advance
- Confidential handling of itineraries and passenger details
- Liaison with venues, hotels and other drivers
Free consultation for journeys across Sussex, Surrey and London.
Who Security Drivers Suit
Security drivers are used by people and organisations who want journeys to be planned, private and predictable:
- Executives and senior managers: travel between offices, meetings and airports, often to a tight schedule.
- Visiting guests and delegations: businesses hosting visitors who do not know the area.
- Private clients and families: travel to events, appointments and school where privacy matters.
- Event organisers: transfers for speakers, performers or guests between hotels and venues.
- Businesses moving sensitive items: documents or equipment that should not be left unattended.
Security Drivers and Close Protection
A security driver is not the same as a close protection officer. If your risk assessment shows you need someone to protect a person on foot as well as on the road, that role is close protection, and the officer must hold an SIA close protection licence. We will tell you honestly which you need. Where close protection is required, see our close protection services, and our comparison of residential security and close protection.
How Our Security Driver Service Works
1. Consultation. We talk through who is travelling, where, how often and any concerns, such as a public profile, a recent incident or travel at unsociable hours.
2. Journey planning. For each assignment we plan the main route and alternatives, pick-up and drop-off points, parking and timings, and agree how the driver will keep in touch with you or your assistant.
3. Driver briefing. The driver is briefed on the passengers, the itinerary and the agreed procedures, including what to do if plans change or something feels wrong.
4. The journey. The driver carries out the journey as planned, adapts when traffic or circumstances change, and reports anything of concern afterwards. Itineraries and passenger details are kept confidential.
Airport Transfers and Events
Airport runs and events are where journeys most often go wrong: delayed flights, crowded pick-up areas and road closures. Drivers track arrival times, agree a meeting point in advance and plan where to wait, so passengers are met promptly and are not left standing at the kerb. For businesses near the airport, see our page on security for Gatwick Airport businesses.
What to Look For in a Security Driver
- Vetting. Ask how drivers are screened, including identity, right to work, employment history and criminal record checks.
- Driving record and training. Ask about the driver's licence history and any advanced or defensive driving training.
- Security awareness. A good security driver can explain how they plan routes, choose where to stop and notice when something is wrong.
- Insurance. Check who insures the driver and the vehicle for business use.
- The right licence for the role. If the work includes protecting a person rather than only driving, the officer needs an SIA close protection licence. You can check any licence on the SIA's public register.
- Discretion. Ask how itineraries and passenger details are protected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about security drivers.
What is a security driver?
A security driver is a driver trained to think about safety as well as driving. They plan routes and alternatives, time pick-ups so passengers are not left waiting in the open, choose safe places to stop, notice unusual activity and keep journey details private. It suits people who need more than a chauffeur but do not need a full close protection team.
What is the difference between a security driver and a chauffeur?
A chauffeur focuses on comfort and punctuality. A security driver adds planning and awareness: route and risk planning before the journey, alternative routes, discreet pick-up points and attention to anyone taking an unusual interest in the passenger or the vehicle. Both should be professional and discreet, but a security driver is chosen when safety is part of the brief.
Does a security driver need an SIA licence?
Driving on its own is not a licensable activity. If the role also involves protecting a person, for example escorting them on foot or guarding them at a venue, that is close protection and the officer needs an SIA close protection licence. We will advise which role your journey needs, and our SIA licensing guide explains how to check a licence.
Do you provide the vehicle?
Our drivers can drive your own vehicle or company car. If you need a vehicle for an assignment, raise it at the consultation and we will discuss the options for your journey. Tell us early about any special requirements, such as space for luggage or equipment, or a child seat, so the journey can be planned properly.
Can you provide a security driver for airport transfers?
Yes. Airport transfers are one of the most common requests, particularly to and from Gatwick and Heathrow. The driver tracks the flight, agrees a meeting point in advance and plans where to wait, so passengers are met without delay and are not left at the kerb with their luggage. Itineraries and flight details are kept confidential.
